You Have What It Takes: Fighting for Your Child’s Needs

The world isn’t built for children like ours. Every day, they encounter obstacles most people can’t begin to imagine. Whether it’s placing a puzzle piece, navigating a classroom that wasn’t designed for them, or simply trying to belong, they have to fight harder than the rest of the world.

And yet, they persevere.

They try. They fall. They get back up and try again.

As parents, we are their first and fiercest advocates. But let’s be honest—it’s exhausting. It’s easy to wonder, Am I strong enough? Do I have what it takes to push back against this incredibly broken system? The answer is yes. Yes, you do.

Look at your child. Look at how hard they fight to be included in a world that doesn’t see them for all they are. Look at the determination in their every success, no matter how small.

If they can fight that hard for their place in the world, then we, as family caregivers, must fight just as hard to make that world a better place for them.

You might not have all the answers right now. You might feel like you’re failing some days. That’s okay. What matters is showing up, over and over again, because nobody else will advocate for your child like you will. You are their voice in rooms they aren’t invited into. You are their champion in a system that’s been stacked against them by sneaky lobbyists and cold-hearted bureaucrats.

The fight for your child’s rights may be long and frustrating, but it’s a fight worth having. Every call you make, every meeting you attend, every letter you send—it all matters. Because when you fight, you’re telling your child: I see you. I believe in you. And I will never stop fighting for you.

So the next time you’re tempted to give up, think of your child placing that puzzle piece, tying their shoes, or making their voice heard in a world that underestimates them. Remember their determination.

Then summon yours.

Because if not you, then who?

You have what it takes.
